LEONARD JOSEPH BIBO
Len
was born on the 11th of October, 1928, to Jack and Vera, the
third &dest of nine children. He grew up at Greenslopes on
the south side of Brisbane, and attended St. Joachim’s
primary school at Holland Park and St. Joseph’s at Kangaroo
Point.
After
completing his Scholarship year at St. Josephs, Len worked for a
few years, first alongside his father, a carpenter, and then for
a legal firm in Brisbane. But Len was obviously contemplating a
different kind of service, and he entered Pius XII Provincial
Seminary at Banyo. Len completed his remaining four years of
school at the Seminary, continued to study for the priesthood,
and was ordained in 1955.
At
that time the Cairns Diocese had a great need for priests, and
Len answered the call to come to Cairns, where he remained for
all of the years of his priestly ministry. Len loved far north
Queensland, and served in the parishes of North Cairns, Tully,
West Cairns, Malanda, Thursday Island, Cooktown and Cape York
Peninsula. It is perhaps in his ministry to remote areas of Cape
York Peninsula that Len found his niche and was happiest. For
more than two decades, in a succession of dusty but reliable four
wheel drives, he travelled extensively throughout Cape York
Peninsula, living his Gospel message as an intrinsic and
respected part of the communities he served.
Len
was known as a great storyteller, and his travels certain’
provided him with much rich material. He was also an avid reader,
and never ceased collecting books and educating himself on a wide
range of subjects. He was always popular with children, whether
in a parish school, on a cattle station or at family gatherings.
Unfortunately
his characteristic self-sufficiency was countered by declining
health, and he was forced to retire from his beloved bush
travelling. Due to further health problems, he was admitted to
Bethlehem Nursing Home, Len died peacefully on the afternoon of
Friday 24th of July.
Len
is survived by his two sisters, Mary and Ursla, and by his
brothers John, Tony, Terry and Bernard. They and their families,
along with the many people of far north Queensland whose lives
Len touched, will remember him fondly in their prayers. He is
much loved and will be greatly missed.
